The difference is not noticable to the novice by looking at them but by riding. The Trek will have better components, forks, shifters, derailluers, and everything else. The Trek will come in different sizes while the department store bike is only one size. I bought several Walmart bikes and had a problem with everyone of them. I do not recomend them at all. The good Schwinn bikes are sold at bike shops not department stores. The Trek will be assembled and adjusted correctly and you can get service if something goes wrong or needs adjustment. You can get a Trek 820 for around $300 and get twice the bike of the $200 schwinn.

It is a lot better and it is worth spending the money. The Schwinn for $200 is low quality and is prone to breaking. They are not made to last. Trek is their own brand and has been making quality bikes since the 1970s. The trek will last you a long time and is well made with quality components. Do not ever buy bikes from Department stores or box stores. Target does not sell any decent bikes at all. The Trek from a bike shop will be 100% worth the price.

There is a huge difference in quality between a $200 bike and a $400 one. Think of it this way: Both bikes take about the same time to assemble, so that is a fixed cost, so the more expensive bike uses parts that cost a lot more to buy. Everything on the Trek will be better, lighter, stronger. If you ride your bike often, the better bike will soon pay you back in lower maintenance costs and fewer problems.

It depends honistly if you are serious about bikeing then treck is the way to go. On the other hand if you will be rideing around the block then the $200 shwin should be what you need. But the the reason that the treck is mor expinsave and much better is because they use better parts like better brakes so overtime they will not loosen or stop working also better shoks (if the bike has them) also higher quality shifters so gears will alweas be easy to shift. One other thing on treck is better rims and spokes to help the bike last. So overall the treck is by far supieror and it will outlast and outproform the shwin.

>>what makes a $400 bike double the price of a $200 schwinn bike from target

As stated the Trek will usually have the better component mix. Assembly by a local bike shop will likely be done correctly. The Trek will come in a bigger range of sizes, thus more likely to fit properly. So, better components, better assembly, more sizes, and higher overhead at the lbs are the reasons the Trek cost more.

>>is it worth spending more money and getting a trek?

Yes. For pride of ownership if nothing else. If you ever want to sell it, will move a lot quicker most likely.
